Japanese paper – washi – comes in a large range of weights, textures, colours, and patterns that are a great resource for book artists. But can you use them for something other than Japanese-style binding? Yes, you can! To illustrate the myriad ways washi can be used for book arts, Sigrid will show and discuss works from the collection of The Japanese Paper Place.

After being inspired by how various makers have used washi, we will go through the sample package together to learn about the characteristics of the various papers in it, and how you might use them yourself.

The Ethiopian binding structure may have emerged as early as the fourth century and has been in use unchanged for centuries. In this workshop, students will make a full-leather binding with braided leather endbands and cloth board linings. Students will begin by folding and punching sections, and drilling holes into wood boards. Simple tooling will enhance the finished binding.

WHAT DO WE OFFER TO OUR MEMBERS?

CBBAG members are from all branches of the book arts: bookbinders, fine printers, papermakers, paper decorators, calligraphers, and book artists, as well as collectors, book dealers, librarians, and those who love books.
